Out of date
This is still one of the best Japanese dictionaries Ive ever used (paperback) and other free dictionary apps in the iTunes Store but I feel like this app isnt as user friendly as it should be and not up to par with this new generation of apps (2016, iOS 10). Because Ive relied on it since iPhone 3GS Ive given it 2 stars out of loyalty, respect for the developers, and thanks for it coming in handy for homework from my Japanese classes Ive taken. There is no way to get support as the feature is bugged.
Pros: conjugation, romaji and component search, and sentence examples.
Cons: this app will automatically refresh and lose your search result if you dare to double tap the home button to switch apps momentarily (you cant view a Japanese site, switch to Japanese dictionary, lookup a word, switch back to safari, and switch back to the dictionary to review the word you looked up because the app will automatically start a new search) this is unacceptable if youre a student trying to learn different conjugations or trying to view the examples to learn how to use the searched word.
Another con is the handwritten search: try as you might knowing even the stroke order and proper proportions of a kanji, the app fails to recognize the kanji youve written. iOS native handwritten support works better as Ive seen my girlfriends usage of it when shes writing a text in Chinese on the message app. Please adopt Apples handwriting code.
The flash card code is too simple and other apps do a better job. This apps flash cards repeat the same word over and over no matter if you have 20 study material or 50, you will run into the same kanji after 2 flips even though youve answered it correctly. This is in acceptable for an app that costs this much. Poor RNG coding.
This app could also use a complete overhaul of the GUI (swipe down to start a new search, swipe left to view the conjugations of the word you just searched, swipe right to see example sentences, etc.) No one scrolls up or down in apps anymore. Its archaic and for something that has a lot of information condensed into one single long page, this is too cumbersome to navigate.
