Best ever

This is my first ever review but this is the best program for learning Japanese ever!! I have tried everything and this combines them all and wins hands down. Anyone serious about learning Japanese should get this right away, I would gladly pay $30+ for a program this good, its a steal! Better than even real Japanese dictionaries and the updates add so much more functionality. I use it many times everyday.

Good but...

Pricey, but good program. The flashcard feature is so handy but it doesnt work properly; it will test you the most on vocabulary youve already mastered. Fixing that and including a grammar reference by JLPT level would be most appreciated!

I like it

I like it a lot. Its well developed, almost too nice. The only inaccuracy I found was that the hiligana and katakana lists were missing gya gyu gyo ja ju jo dya dyu dyo...ect... For Japan one must useじゃ and it isnt there. Please issue these characters, the list is not compleated. Really, everything els is so nice, why is that not there? Oh and just a thought, add a translator for English sentences to Japanese. The words are all there, wouldnt need to be online would it? Tristan

Very helpful

This app is hands down the best Japanese dictionary out there. Well worth the money. My only complaint is that the flashcard software seems a little basic, especially when compared with other srs systems like smart.fm. An improved flashcard system, a translator, the ability to add your own entries and some sort of community feature would all be great future additions to this app. All in all, though, my favorite app. Highly recommended to anyone.

Romaji issue

Overall, great app if you want to fully learn Japanese. My focus though is just speaking so I use romaji. Unfortunately, this app lacks a lot of it. A free app named Kotoba! has more romaji than this app. An example is the word snake (hebi). A worse example are simple numbers (ichi). Im surprised how it didnt have romaji. Oh well. Hope they fill in the gaps so I dont have to use my romaji dictionary book. At the least, i can still search words using romaji. The price is of a real dictionary which is reasonable. Im not a fan of carrying a book or two and flipping pages to find a word. Especially with free updates, cant go wrong. Dont need another edition again. Or so I hope. The app is still buggy unfortunately even after many updates. Hope they do get fixed soon.

Very good but a little bit pricey...

I use this app almost every day and enjoy it. But one problem is that it tends to be slow to react on my iPod Touch 2nd generation. Its still usable but sometime irritating. Another thing is that its English only whereas Kotoba! is multilingual, which is better for me since Im French speaking. Search results are also much better in Kotoba!. Study cards are nice but would be even better if they were interactive instead of passive. Use iKanji Touch to study instead. Good overall but might be a bit pricey for what it offers (vs Kotoba!, which is free!).

Awesome tool!

Ive been using this app for over a year now and it proved invaluable. I bought many other Japanese/Kanji reference tools but this is the only one that proved handy enough to stick around in my mostly used apps for so long. Thanks.

Great learning tool for beginner to novice.

For a while Ive been hoping to find an application that does exactly what "Japanese" does. Allow me to search any word I need, anyway I want (English, Romaji, Kana, Kanji, masu form if I cant remember the dictionary form) and add any word I hear during class to a list that I can study later as flash cards. A few improvements I hope for are : Less crashing (the software crashed on me like 10 times while setting up a list of 150 words) and not having to scroll back up the entire list to access the options listed at the top. The options (add, delete, edit, etc.) should always be visible while scrolling down. Bottom line, this is a great dictionary for anyone not yet so comfortable with Japanese but far enough in the process of learning it.

Best app for learners of Japanese!

This dictionary allows you to search using the ます forms of verbs, includes conjugated forms of verbs and adjectives, allows you to create your own study lists, lets you write notes per entry...If they came out with the iPad version I would buy it inmediately! I have bought the overpriced collins gem ($19.99) and found it sadly wanting in versatility and usefulness in comparison to this dictionary.

Saved me more than once

Seriously saved me more than a few times during my last trip to Japan.

Excellent study tool

Very useful app, very versatile search function as mentioned in other reviews. Well worth the price.

Excellent Dictionary

I moved to Japan two and a half years ago, and when I did, I bought an iPod Touch specifically so I could use this program. So far, its been the most useful Japanese-language app Ive ever downloaded. If you need a Japanese-English dictionary, this is the only one you need consider. The only extra feature I wish it had was a way to save/load your saved vocabulary lists and flashcard stats online. A+

Simply the best reference tool for iOS

Dont take my word for it! Buy it!

Best Japanese Dictionary just got better!

Ive been waiting for this update for ages and it was MORE than worth the wait. They really hit it out of the park again and exceeded all of my expectations. The handwriting works really well and the new study mode works well. I dont get the discover mode, but thats like complaining about the wallpaper on the computer. Above all else, the iPad version is AWESOME. There are free apps, but they dont have anywhere near the features.

Version 3.0? wow!

They promised the iPad UI a d now its out! Even though I no longer have the iPad, this company delivers their promise. Testing the new UI on the iPhone I was blown away by the changes theyve made. The amount of work put into this is tremendous. I am glad they took their time to perfect this dictionary instead of rushing it. The new intuitive floating word interface helps me learn new random words and the program now is so much easier to use. In the past, this software relies heavily on the Chinese hand-writing input. The character displayed also is using Chinese character. The new japanese input not only removes this dependency but also updated their dictionary to use proper japanese kanji. The new back up feature will help people learning japanese like myself go back to my search history and flash cards Ive viewed to review words Ive learned. I normally wouldnt write a review for an app nor would I pay $10 for one, but the fact that it didnt bother me to review it like other apps and the awesome new features and redesign got me posting this review. This app deserves a golden developer award! Keep up the good work お疲れ様でした!

Excellent.

Perfect for all levels of comprehension.

Mandatory

Ive been in Japan for seven years, been through a dozen apps, and this is the ultimate resource for anyone serious about studying japanese. Worth the price many times over.

Amazing app!!

This app is amazing, made sure to get it before going to Japan recently. The only issue I had was the kanji recognition part. I am unable to scroll through more options if the kanji I wrote wasnt in the immediate list shown on the right. If its a new kanji and I dont know the correct stroke order it can be very difficult to find the right one on the list. This might be a bug on the iPad, Im not sure, but please fix asap!! I need that scrolling feature to work and then it will be perfect :) Thanks for doing such a great job on this!

Best app for learning new words

Best application ever. What I love most is the verb/adjective conjugator -- that and the study component :)

Whats not to love?

Japanese is an amazing app. Its cheaper than an equivalent paper dictionary, and so much better. The pace of development has been a little slow, but the latest version is very, very good. iCloud syncing of vocab lists and an app on the Mac would make this pretty much perfect.
