Japanese App Reviews

Subarashii

This is hands-down the best Japanese dictionary I have seen. I love the apps extras too. My only complaints are that (1) the flash cards option does not do a good job of eliminating cards you get correct like the flash cards app does, and (2) the app does not remember where you were in the app when you multi-task, etc. (Also, no one ever responded to my customer service inquiry.) Still, it easily merits five stars for all the things it does right.

Please bring back flashcard animations

This is an extremely powerful Japanese app with a great dictionary and so-so handwriting recognition (not as good as Microsofts). I used to use it to study vocab every day, but an update long ago removed the flashcard "flipping over" animations and the fun. I never would have thought this to be such a big deal, but it is. Ive never used it as much since. One obvious enhancement needed is the ability to turn your dictionary search history into a flash card study set, in addition to the normal "study" mode and the JPLT study mode. It would be super helpful if I could study, for example, every word I looked up in the past week/month/year.

Memory bug since iOS 8

iOS 8 has been available for a long time now. This memory bug has crippled the efficiency of this app. Please fix this. This is the best dictionary app suffering from an easy-to-fix bug.

The best app for studying.

Ive had this app for about 2 years, and it has helped me incredibly. Flash cards, dictionary, thesaurus, everything in one app. Beautiful design, smooth operation, and highly valuable.

Great app!

Hands down the best English-Japanese dictionary app Ive ever used. Stable, nicely designed, and many great features!

The only one you need

This is a very awesome learning dictionary - not just for looking up words but vital if you are serious about learning Japanese. Being able to save words in lists, organize lists, and then study is highly useful. Dont be cheap. If you will just casually look up a few words then maybe a free dictionary will do the job but for anyone who really wants to learn, just spend the money and you will find that its worth it.

The Best Smartphone Dictionary

I have been studying Japanese for years and this is the best dictionary I have ever found. It has a huge word selection and is easy to use. Most importantly it has a word list and study function that aids in learning a lot. As a language teacher I give this a huge recommendation.

Great way to learn but...

How do you make it pronounce words because I have no idea if Im saying it right

Amazing

It perfect for students of Japanese! Its handy, offline, and 100% worth it. Ive had it for at least 5 years now and it just gets better with every update! The app provides extremely useful ways to look up Japanese words and Kanji, and study them.

The best tool for learning Japanese

I use this app as dictionary and to learn kanji by creating my own lists. I’ve owned this app for years and it only gets better with time. Recently I learned of the feature to create a list just by ‘pasting’ - so I can pull the kanji list from any iPhone app and create the study list in a single step. I have recommended this app to every Japanese teacher and student I’ve met.

Fantastic App

Well done! I peruse it all the time, and use it to look up grammar structures and words of course.

Its a great app but....

Every time that I switch away from the app you lose whatever you were doing. For example if you are reading a manga in one app and need to look up a word, you draw the first kanji but forget the second one. When you go back and look, you loose the first kanji in your search. I love this app and have had it for over a year but I am strongly considering switching to midori because of how annoying this is.

update 2105. Abandoned app? No response from developer

As a dictionary: fantastic. Truly great. But the developer does not respond to repeated mails and its been a very long time since an update. Well over a year. This app was once wonderful. An excellent dictionary. But the flashcard system really is inferior compared to most other apps, and this takes away from it as a powerful study tool. How about an update with a more precise algorithm? Repeated mails to the developer have gone unanswered. Facebook page no longer has updates. Have to wonder if it is still being developed. I see others have voiced complaints recently. Hope the developer is still out there.

What the heck... NOW FREE?

I bought this app a while back for $6.99, and come back to find it free? What the heck, guys, you basically stole my money!

Brilliantly Brilliant

Its the most beautiful and amazing japanese learning tool ever found. Also you learn English very well.

Tremedous Functionality

This app is incredible. I first found it searching for an app that would automatically identify hand-written kanji. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find a plethora of additional functionality. In particular, automatic study cards, phrases grouped by category (e.g. economics, biology, etc.) and the example sentences are some of my favorites. I highly recommend this app and I commend the creators for implementing high quality throughout the app (unlike so many quickly developed apps in the app store). Thank you to the creators! *As a note, I primarily use it with my iPad mini, so I cannot attest the iPhone experience*

Essential to a Japanese language student

I rated this app 3 1/2 years ago, when I first started studying Japanese. Im 4 years in now and have never used another app. This is the only one you need, and now it is free. In my 4 years of study, Ive made over 400 lists. Ive loaded the program down with so many long and meticulous notes, that a normal app probably wouldnt even be able to start. But this is no normal app. This is a piece of ingenuity. I dont know how the programmers did it, but they made the sturdiest app Ive ever used. Sure it crashes sometimes, but never has data been lost, and with an easy backup system that sends the data right to my inbox, I can rest assured my 400 lists and endless notes are not going anywhere soon. I trust this app with my life, because my life is Japanese study. Best app ever.

The best, with caveat

I paid $20 for this back before it was free, and it was easily worth it. Its ability to search is incredibly polished. I especially love searching by skip code. My only gripe is that whenever the app goes into the background it seems to crash. So if I look up a word, switch to a different app and back, I lose my place. Thats the only reason this is 4 instead of 5 stars.

Amazing

This app is easy to use, beautiful looking, and very powerful. No app purchases, no ads. I have never seen such a great dictionary for so little (nothing). Thank you so much to the developers. Learning Japanese is now a feasible task thanks to this!

Awesome!!!

This dictionary is perfect !!! I think one can even learn Japanese alone with it! From the most rudimental 50 oto, it even has a animation showing you the order to write it! And you can browse kanji from easy to hard. And the classification of words is powerful! all you can think of! And a whole bunch of examples. And all the transformation of words! I will recommend this dictionary to all my friends interested in Japanese.
