Awesome features and very easy to use
Far exceeded expectations
I was expecting a simple Kanji dictionary to help me even just a little, instead I got a simple designed; easy to navigate through dictionary of kanji, hand-writing setting along with others on keyboard, a spread of the kanji Radicals, and even showing the stroke order of characters. ..Oh my goodness. I was so so pleased to know I could use all this even without internet connect; you dont understand. The saved history and ability to save words into folders really makes it simple to keep on track with learning. Over all: thank you for creating this app. ありがとございます!
This is the only Japanese dictionary app you need. Any other app is just trying to copy this one. The developer is still working hard on this app and will communicate with you if you have issues. Looking forward to the update!
This app is the best app by far. Highly recommend. Seriously!!!! Everything is there when you download this app. You dont need Internet connection. When I figured this out, I almost fainted. LOL!!
Problems: 1) nearly two years without an update 2) Facebook page posted for “beta testers” wanted on February 8; still no update or updated information. that facebook post has since been DELETED 3) it used to be a paid, now it’s free — it will become a paid service in the future It has so much potential, but serious Japanese students can not depend on the developers. Check the timelines: they will respond to many mails in a one week stretch, then disappear for months. The dictionary itself IS excellent, but the flashcard system uses a very poor SRS system. I think the high reviews are coming from new users who have not realized these flaws. I will happily change my review to five stars if these problems are addressed.
Ive been using this app to get the definitions and readings for kanji I dont know, but have been having a rough time with it. The handwriting feature sounds great but its wrong more often than not. You get tired of it if it takes ten tries to write even the simplest kanji. The component search is more efficient even though it takes a long time, but it doesnt have all the radicals... Im not going to give it a low mark since it looks like it does well in other departments, but it really isnt being that useful to me...
Could use right away. Well organized and very easy to use.
Its just essential Japanese dictionary if you are learning/want to learn . I use it with my google translate.
Definitely the best dictionary app Ive seen, and the Discover feature is awesome :D
Normally I dont bother leaving app reviews, but this time Ill make an exception! This is seriously one of my favorite apps. Not only is it beautiful and simplistic, its an absolute necessity if youre studying Japanese. The dictionary is vast and the ability to use flash cards and study specific words is a nice extra feature. To think this app is free boggles my mind, easily worth $10+
I paid $10 for this app on sale many years ago and after becoming free it hasnt been properly updated. The app will go back to the main screen if you try to use another app, which makes translation and high level translation use very difficult.
Hey Mark: your app crashes and you no longer answer mail from multiple users. No update for two years. Facebook posts are deleted. Whats the future here? As a dictionary this really is excellent. But as a reliable study tool for serious students, it is not. It has not been updated since 2014. Repeated mails to the developer have gone unanswered, but years ago he did reply. Yes, a great dictionary with potential. But it is not a reliable for those who want to use the flash card system. People leave comments on the Facebook page but there too, no responses. I will happily give this five stars once the developers respond or update. Until then, I cant invest time in it.
This app is amazing I cant believe its free. Nor can I believe how much stuff is in this app and it has yet to crash on me. Great addition to my studies.
TL;DR: The most recent version of this app works fine on iOS 10. While I still hope the developers plan a big upgrade to this app in the near future, my biggest concern was that it would no longer work correctly on iOS 10. I upgraded to 10.0.2 and so far so good. For my review of the app itself, I must say that this is by far the most useful tool that I use in my Japanese language study. I rely heavily on the ability to create and study list of words and characters. And the text entry method for drawing characters is a great tool for looking up new characters (even though it’s imperfect). If you are self-motivated and committed to working on the language a little bit every day, then this app will be a great companion to you. Lastly, the backup method for the app creates a file that you can email to another device. It contains all of your lists and notes and importing is as easy as clicking on the attachment. This is a cool low-tech solution. Even if a future version of this app includes cloud sync, I hope they keep this email backup feature. Big thanks to the team that designed and built this app.
This is a very nice app, but when I switch to other apps and come back it doesnt stay on the word I was looking up. Such a minor complaint but it does have me thinking about buying a different app. If this app ever receives an update, please change this or at least make it an option. Thanks
So other than being a great dictionary what I love is that you can easily organize words into different folders to study as flash cards AND the app comes with JLPT folders (look it up!) so if you dont know where to start studying the app comes with flashcards on different scales of difficulty.
Everything anyone would need in a Japanese dictionary. Even has built-in conjugations, example sentences, and kanji details for every word. Easy to use interface, very intuitive, simple yet effectively elegant. Have since deleted all other Japanese dictionaries, finally found my one-for-all Japanese application.
Organise, precise, clear and clean. Bonus is all free.
This is still one of the best Japanese dictionaries Ive ever used (paperback) and other free dictionary apps in the iTunes Store but I feel like this app isnt as user friendly as it should be and not up to par with this new generation of apps (2016, iOS 10). Because Ive relied on it since iPhone 3GS Ive given it 2 stars out of loyalty, respect for the developers, and thanks for it coming in handy for homework from my Japanese classes Ive taken. There is no way to get support as the feature is bugged. Pros: conjugation, romaji and component search, and sentence examples. Cons: this app will automatically refresh and lose your search result if you dare to double tap the home button to switch apps momentarily (you cant view a Japanese site, switch to Japanese dictionary, lookup a word, switch back to safari, and switch back to the dictionary to review the word you looked up because the app will automatically start a new search) this is unacceptable if youre a student trying to learn different conjugations or trying to view the examples to learn how to use the searched word. Another con is the handwritten search: try as you might knowing even the stroke order and proper proportions of a kanji, the app fails to recognize the kanji youve written. iOS native handwritten support works better as Ive seen my girlfriends usage of it when shes writing a text in Chinese on the message app. Please adopt Apples handwriting code. The flash card code is too simple and other apps do a better job. This apps flash cards repeat the same word over and over no matter if you have 20 study material or 50, you will run into the same kanji after 2 flips even though youve answered it correctly. This is in acceptable for an app that costs this much. Poor RNG coding. This app could also use a complete overhaul of the GUI (swipe down to start a new search, swipe left to view the conjugations of the word you just searched, swipe right to see example sentences, etc.) No one scrolls up or down in apps anymore. Its archaic and for something that has a lot of information condensed into one single long page, this is too cumbersome to navigate.
